Australia and Vanuatu share a close and longstanding friendship and partnership. We proudly join with Vanuatu to celebrate Vanuatu’s 40th Anniversary of Independence, which also makes 40 years of diplomatic relations between our two countries. Australia has had a High Commission in Port Vila since Vanuatu declared independence in 1980. Prior to this the Australian Consulate was opened in 1978.

Australia and Vanuatu enjoy a very broad range of links at government, business and community levels. Our friendship is enhanced by our people to people links and underwritten by our shared values and desire for a prosperous and secure region. Australians were touched by the response of the Government and people of Vanuatu during the recent bushfires in Australia. As the people of Vanuatu face unprecedented challenges from Tropical Cyclone Harold and COVID-19, Australia is here to help. Australia is Vanuatu's largest bilateral aid donor and closest security partner.

Vanuatu provides the largest cohort of workers in the Pacific under the Seasonal Worker Programme (almost 5000 in 2018-19). Under the SWP, workers from Pacific countries work in Australia in agriculture and other sectors to help meet seasonal demand. Vanuatu is also participating in the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS). The PLS helps to meet low and semi-skilled business demand across all sectors in rural and regional Australia.

The Australian High Commission in Port Vila also provides consular and passports services to Australian and Canadian citizens and to Australian permanent residents in Vanuatu.

Vanuatu Beverage Ltd is Vanuatu's oldest bottling plant and only manufacturer of "Vanuatu Water" the only Natural Spring Water in Vanuatu.

The company started with a small production of the famous drink "Splashe" with a dozen employees and almost 50 years later the company extended with two new buildings, including a distribution branch in Santo, and employs 90 Ni-Vanuatu to produce almost 100 products under 10 different brands.

The fully automated line operates 24h/5 days a week and has a production capacity to supply for the whole of Vanuatu. This new capacity allows the company to donate and deliver tens of thousands of liters of water in time of need like most recently during the recovery efforts for TC Harold, the drought in Tanna, the Manaro eruption and the following ash falls polluting nearby water reserves. Also, VB has a close intricate relationship with all communities throughout Vanuatu and spends approximately millions of vatu per year sponsoring big and small events.

VB is an active member of the Vanuatu Waste Management & Recyclers Associations and has been working with the government for 2 years to impose a refund from the manufacturer or importer for every single PET bottle, which will be then brought back to a recycler as a way to clean up most of the waste in Vanuatu and provide income to communities.

Today, VB is proud of its history and is happier than ever to be a contributor and a participant of the 40th anniversary celebration of Vanuatu’s Independence.

Long God Yumi Stanap! Long Live Republic of Vanuatu! Happy 40th Independence Anniversary!

83 Islands Distillery makes premium craft rum and spirits using local Vanuatu ingredients. We are proud to make rum in Vanuatu and we hope that our bottles which are emblazoned with Vanuatu will be exported and enjoyed all over the world.

Vanuatu is one of the cleanest places on earth, with organic crops and untouched subtropical forests. When we started the distillery, we had the goal of showcasing the country and its people’s savoir-faire to the world by using as many local ingredients as possible. We are now distilling or infusing fruits such as pineapple and kombava. We extract kava to use in our spice rum featuring local vanilla and pepper. We are a young company and like Vanuatu did 40 years ago, we embarked on an incredible journey of growth. We hope that one day our rum will gain the maturity that Vanuatu has today.

It seems appropriate to use this occasion to dream about the future of Vanuatu and 83 Islands Distillery. For us, the future means employing dozens, or even hundreds more ni-Vanuatu for planting and harvesting Vanuatu sugarcane. It means an equitable and sustainable relationship with farmers. It means having hundreds of tourists every day flying in to visit Vanuatu and our distillery from all-over the world. It means training and having a highly skilled local workforce to manage the production, manufacture and export of high-quality rum. It means Vanuatu having a more diversified economy and being recognised as a producer and exporter of high-quality products. It means a more prosperous Vanuatu for everyone.
